What is laughing gas?

Laughing gas, also called nitrous oxide, is one of several sedation options available for kids at Herrin Pediatric Dentistry. Your child can still respond to the team’s requests and questions throughout their treatment.

What should my child expect while getting laughing gas?

Nitrous oxide is completely colorless and odorless. The team places a mask over your child’s nose so they can breathe in the laughing gas just before their treatment starts. Your child should breathe in through their nose as they normally would, and the laughing gas takes effect in minutes. 

The gas slows down your child’s nervous system, which settles their anxiety and helps them sit still. They’ll feel a bit lightheaded and heavy in the arms and legs, but they’ll feel calm and relaxed most of all. When the procedure is complete, your child’s dentist takes the mask off their face and the effects wear off shortly after that. 

Right after the team removes your child’s mask, they administer pure oxygen to your child for around five minutes. This helps them become more alert and avoid headaches or other unwanted side effects.

Laughing gas is a safe dental sedative option that works well for children who are anxious about going to the dentist, have strong gag reflexes, or who have a hard time remaining still as they get dental work.
