Halloween Candy

Herrin Pediatric Dentistry wants everyone to have a safe and happy Halloween!! Many patients and parents ask, “What is the best or worst candy to eat?” Unless the candy is sugar-free there really is no tooth healthy candy treat, but some candies are worse than others.

The following is a list of what are the worst candies and why:

1. Sticky Candies (Starbursts, Skittles, Airheads, gummy bears, candy corn, etc.). They stick to the teeth long after eating the snack.

2. Sodas. The worst thing to combine with candy is sodas such as Cooca-Cola. Carbonated beverages are acidic which weakens the enamel and also are high in sugar.

3. Bubble Gums (Bubblicious, Bubble Tape, Super Bubble, Etc.) continuously bathe the teeth in sugar while chewing.

4. Suckers and other hard candies. These treats stay in the mouth for an extended period of time increasing the tooth’s exposure to sugar.

Dr. Brent knows that you are going to enjoy treats this Halloween; just be wise in your choices! Remember the best thing to do after sweets is to immediately brush and floss. If you can’t brush, at least try to rinse your mouth out with mouthwash or water. Rinsing will dilute the sugars that are on your teeth. Happy Halloween!!
